MyDot.Dog's 5 Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe This Summer

Summer in New England is one of our most treasured times of year. No puffy coats, winter boots, sleet, snow and freezing rain - we have to remain mindful of the dangers that these months possess for our furry friends. Find out 5 simple tips to keep your dog safe this summer along with key warning signs.

#1 Limit Outdoor Time

  • I know you might read this and go…huh? But yes, we strongly suggest limiting outdoor time during the summer months for your pet.

Here’s Why:

  • Heat Exhaustion or overheating

  • Sunburn - yes your dog can get sunburn too

  • Avoid strenuous exercise on hot days

  • Be cautious of asphalt as it can burn their paws

  • If your dog is brachycephalic (short snout breed) such as Boxers, Pugs, Bulldogs, Pekingese they have an especially hard time in the heat as they cannot breathe as efficiently as a longer snout breed.

  • Rest assured we have some smart and simple tips to beat the sun!

Safety Tips:

  • Find a cool shady area or an air conditioned spot - avoid dog houses. They are not a proper shady spot as they trap and lock in the heat.

  • Provide your pet with plenty of water

  • Intermittent exercise during the early morning or evening when the sun is not as strong

  • If you have a dog with a short coat, check in with your veterinarian and see if they recommend a dog specific sunscreen. Some human sunscreen contains chemicals that are toxic for your pets.

#2 Are Your Dog’s Vaccinations Up to Date?

  • This might sound like a no-brainer but it is especially important to keep your dog’s vaccinations up to date during the summer months.

Here’s Why:

  • Ticks and fleas LOVE warm weather and some carry heartworm and can transmit diseases to your furry friend.

  • Since we try to be outside more during the summer your dog is more likely to get in contact with other dogs or animals and it is best to be protected.

  • Keep your dog off lawns that have been fertilized as they can be toxic and deadly.

  • Maintain a grooming regimen for your pup, especially those with longer coats. This will help protect them from heatstroke, mats, fleas and ticks hiding in their coats.

  • Below are some easy hacks to protect your dog from running up a vet bill, so you can spend that money on something fun for you this summer!

Safety Tips:

  • Call your veterinarian and check to see if your dog is due for any shots and if they recommend any preventive care.

  • The Seresto Collar is an easy solution to keep fleas and ticks away from your pet. It’s water resistant and repels fleas and ticks within 24 hours.

  • Know the signs of poisoning and if you believe your dog has been exposed to toxic chemicals call your veterinarian and or animal poison control

#3 The Do’s & Don'ts of Water Safety

  • Bringing your dog to the beach, lake or pond is a great way to keep them cool during the summer, but like children they need to be cared for and attended to for a fun and safe trip!

Here’s Why:

  • Don’t let your dog drink seawater, it causes dehydration and vomiting

  • Be mindful of standstill waters such as lakes and ponds, toxic algae and other toxic lifeforms can grow in these waters

  • Make sure you’re aware of the undertow or drop off and never leave your dog unattended in open waters

  • This list might sound daunting but as long as you are prepared, in control and follow the safety tips below your trip to the beach, lake or pond should be swimmingly!

Safety Tips:

  • Understand your dog’s breed, not all dogs can swim so consider bringing a lifejacket

  • Always leave your dog on a leash for easy control and handling, consider a waterproof or resistant leash for water use

  • Be aware of local laws and wildlife

#4 Know the Signs of Heat Stroke

  • It can be a scary moment if you witness your dog dehydrated but don’t panic, look at the signs and symptoms below and follow the safety tips listed to ensure your dog is taken care of properly.

Early Stages Symptoms:

  • Heavy panting

  • Excessive drooling

  • Balance problems

  • Bright red gums

Advanced Stages Symptoms:

  • Labored breathing
